Ronaldinho loses Coke deal for drinking Pepsi | AJC Sports Talk.

This is the Coke Wars baby!  If you think team rivalries like the Yankees-Red Sox, Michigan-Ohio St, or anyone in the NFL’s NFC East are intense, you need to check out Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

In the latest twist to the story line, Ronaldinho got caught drinking a Pepsi at a team event for his new club, Atletico Mineiro of Brazil.  The problem is he is sponsored by Coca-Cola through 2014.  Coke’s response was to kick his can to the curb.

Euro 2012′s Final 8 – What Happens Now?

The UEFA European Football Championship group stages are over and it is now down to the final 8.  It’s KNOCKOUT time!  So what happens now?  Who are your picks to advance?  I was not the most successful with my group stage picks.  I only correctly picked three teams from my original picks; Germany, Spain, and France.  Not very good, but hey they are picks.  It is all a gamble.  So, continue to read and listen to me at your own free will.

Quarterfinals

The Czech Republic v. Portugal match-up has become very intriguing.  The Czech’s somehow won their group and Portugal played very well in the Group of Death.  Ronaldo seems to be on his game and will be too much for the Czechs.  Portugal wins 2-0.

Spain v. France has the makings of an epic matchup between two teams that can’t seam to find an identity.  Spain had the benefit of a weak group, yet looked vulnerable against Italy and Croatia.  France started the tournament well before their stinker against Sweden.  Maybe they just didn’t care knowing they were almost a close lock to advance.  Torres has been a difference maker and will be on June 23rd.  My mind tells me Spain would be an easy pick at 2-1 but my gut is pushing me towards an upset by France.  They have a lot of exciting talent that will come together facing a superior opponent.  I’ll give the nod to France, 2-1.

Germany v. Greece looks very lopsided.  Germany has looked fairly strong, while Greece seemed to back into the quarterfinals.  They did beat Russia who started strong.  I think Germany wins 3-0.

England v. Italy is a match-up of two teams I thought would crash and burn, just like in World Cup 2010.  But, these two strong nations always bounce back and are never down in multiple major tournaments.  It is a toss up, but after England got the lucky break of the missed goal by the Ukraine, I see Lady Luck hanging on their side.  Italy’s only win came against an under performing Ireland side.  England wins 1-0 in a defensive battle.

Semifinals

Since my picks usually go wrong I won’t focus a lot of time on discussing what I think will happen after the quarterfinals.  But, I think Portugal will top France 2-1 and Germany will top England 1-0 to set up a final between Portugal and Germany.

Finals

They beat them once and they will beat them again.  Germany will top Portugal in another tight battle, 2-1.  Golden boot will go to ‘Super’ Mario Gomez who already has 3 goals and should get one more.

Two-goal hero: Mario Gomez made the difference for Germany against Holland – and could have done so much for Liverpool

First Games Are Over: Resetting My Euro 2012 Predictions

Sports news sites do this all the time.  They reset their predictions after the first game after gauging how strong a team is playing.  So, here are my reset predictions for group play after the first games.

Group A
Russia looked really strong against the Czech’s, as did Poland in a tie with Greece. If Russian continues that strong play they will easily win this group. The Czech’s looked too weak on defense and this may prove problematic against at least Poland or Greece. I think Poland has a better shot of getting a win over the Czech’s and advancing over them and Greece.

Original picks: Russian, Poland
Modified picks: no change

Group B
The Danes shocked the Dutch and I think that will send the Netherlands packing, as it will be tough for them to get points from both the German side and Portugal.  Portugal hung with Germany and I think they will get at least one win to get enough points and top Denmark on goal differential to advance along with group leader, Germany. This knocks out mine, and I am sure a lot of others top pick to win the tournement (Netherlands).

Original picks: Germany, Netherlands
Modified picks: Germany, Portugal

Group C
Croatia looked really good in a victory over Ireland, while Spain and Italy played to a tie. Italy looked better than I thought they would, but that was because Spain looked lifeless. They had their usual spectacular plays but did not get much close to the net. Fernando Torres, once subbed in, missed a lot of opportunities for Spain. I think with the loss the Irish are out. I still see Spain winning the group, but the second spot comes down to Italy and Croatia. I think Croatia will upset Italy and steal that second spot. If they tie, Croatia still advances on goal differential thanks to Ireland.

Original picks: Spain, Ireland
Modified picks: Spain, Croatia

Group D
Neither England or France looked spectacular. I saw a vulnerable defense from both. Joe Hart seemed to get real lucky on a number a France’s scoring chances.  I was not surprised by the draw. What I was surprised by was Ukraine rolling over Sweden led by the oldest striker in the tournement, Andriy Shevchenko. Host nations do get a boost from the home crowd, but this was something else. I think this helped England more than it helped Ukraine. I originally picked France and Sweden to advance, but I think France and England should pass through as I don’t expect Ukraine to have the same luck with their other games.

Original picks: France, Sweden
Modified picks: France, England

Euro 2012 preview: Group of Death begins

Reblogged from National Post | Sports:

Netherlands vs. Denmark
Noon ET, TSN2

What to watch for:
The Oranje dispatched Denmark 2-0 at the 2010 World Cup, and this time the outcome could be even more one-sided. The Dutch strolled through their qualifying campaign, led by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s 12 goals. Coach Bert van Marwijk has so many offensive weapons, he will bring Huntelaar off the bench, starting Arsenal’s…

I believe the Group of Death comes down to which Dutch team shows up. Will the team that nearly won the World Cup and the team that scored almost 40 goals in qualifying show up? If so they could win it all. Otherwise, if the team that shows up is the same old choke artists expect them to get knocked out in group play, as Portugal and Denmark will be hot on their tails, and Germany will have long left them all in the dust.

Lowered expectations for England at Euro 2012

Reblogged from National Post | Sports:

KRAKOW, Poland — France’s clinical dismissal of Estonia in their final Euro 2012 warmup on Tuesday was yet another blow to any England fan still confident about their team’s chances in Poland and Ukraine.

Their Group D opener against France on Monday looks an even tougher ask after Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery settled some early defensive nerves by running riot in the 4-0 win, which took Les Bleus’ unbeaten streak to 21 matches.

Injuries, suspensions, an ordinary coach - it is plain to see why England and their fans should be lowering their expectations. Unless a miracle happens, which it could, England should be packing for an early trip home from the Euro 2012.
